What to do inside Doha International Airport
Doha International Airport has plenty to do to keep you busy, no matter how long your layover is in Doha! I had a 32 hour layover in Doha, and was unable to leave the airport due to the World Cup (talk about bad timing)! Although I had a 32 hours to spend in Doha International Airport, I enjoyed my time exploring the airport, sleeping in the quiet rooms, and catching up with old friends.
Sleeping in Doha International Airport
First and foremost, if you have a layover in Doha, you’re likely coming from a far-off time zone, or heading to one. Doha was actually my favorite airport I’ve ever slept in (and I’ve slept in a few)! Depending on your budget, you have a few options:
- Sleeping in the “Quiet/Prayer Rooms”
Doha International Airport has numerous Quiet/Prayer rooms, that can be used for a nap in-between flights! They have reclining chairs, as well as carpeted floors you can sleep on if all else fails. I slept on the floor of one of these rooms, underneath the chairs, as there were no open chairs. I slept with an eye mask, headphones, and used my backpack as a pillow. I will say these rooms can get a bit chilly, so make sure you have a jacket! I ended up getting an entire 8-hours of sleep in these rooms, and I have no complaints. - Sleeping pods
If you’re able to afford it, Doha International Airport offers sleeping pods! Sleep-N-Fly offers private sleeping pods, but they’re quite expensive, starting at around $50/hour. If you’re on a budget, you might be able to use these for a couple quick hours of sleep, but a full night’s stay will likely cost you just as much as a hotel.
Grab a bite to eat, shop, get a workout in, or even receive a spa treatment!
Again, this depends on your budget, but a long layover in Doha should give you plenty of time to eat, shop, or even get a spa treatment! Doha International Airport has a variety of restaurants (they are a bit pricey, so I’d definitely bring snacks if you’re short on cash), and plenty of shops – it truly feels like a luxury shopping mall! From Fendi to Paris Saint German, Doha’s airport has a large variety of options to choose from.
Aside from shopping, you can get a workout in, head to the golf simulator, or even a spa treatment at the most popular hotel in Doha, the Oryx Airport Hotel, right within the airport. It’s open from 6 AM to 2 AM, but you’ll find prices can be a bit steep, with access to gym facilities starting at around $50 USD. If you have the budget for it, you can treat yourself during your long layover in Doha!
Where to stay in Doha
If you’re looking to stay near the airport, Doha International Airport has a fair amount of hotels that are very close by. Depending on the length of your long layover in Doha, I recommend one of the following hotels (listed in order of proximity to airport):
- Sleep N Fly is located inside the airport terminal, is more affordable than other options, and offers flexibility. You don’t have to stay for a whole night, you can choose to only stay for a few hours!
- Oryx Airport Hotel is located inside the airport terminal and offers luxurious rooms, a fitness center, spa, and luxury amenities.
- The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa is located just 5 minutes from the airport and features a spa, fitness center, and outdoor pool (5.9 kilometers from Doha International Airport).
- Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara – This resort is located on Banana Island and features a private beach, Anantara Spa, 9 dining options and a lagoon pool (6.6 kilometers from Doha International Airport).
- The St. Regis Doha is located just 20 minutes from the airport and features a private beach, spa, fitness center, and outdoor pool (15.8 kilometers from Doha International Airport).
Transportation to Doha from the airport
Taxi/Ride-Share Services
Getting from the airport to Doha city center is very easy and there are several options available to both budget and luxury travelers!
One of the most popular and easiest options is to take a taxi. Taxis are readily available at the airport and throughout the city, and they are relatively inexpensive compared to other major cities! The minimum taxi fare is 10 Qatari riyal, which is around $2.75 USD, and there is a waiting rate of 8 Qatari riyal per 15 minutes. It’s important to note that while taxis are generally safe and reliable in Doha, you should always confirm the fare with the driver before getting in the taxi to avoid any misunderstandings.
Travel tip: Always ensure you’re getting into a licensed taxi! In many cities around the world, there will be unauthorized, illegitimate “taxis” that will charge you exponentially more than the standard rate, and can be unsafe. Take the time to ensure your safety!
Another option is to use ride-sharing services such as Uber, or Ryde. These services are available both at the airport and throughout the city. With ride-sharing services, you can book, check fares, and track cars online via their apps. Both Uber and Ryde offer cashless payments (you can even pay for Ryde with Bitcoin!), which can be more convenient for travelers who don’t have local currency. It’s worth noting that the availability of ride-sharing services may vary depending on the time of day and the location. You shouldn’t have any trouble getting a ride-share service during the middle of the day, but you’ll find limited service at night.
Take the Doha Metro!
If you’re like me, and looking for a more affordable option, you can use the Doha Metro! The metro system has three lines and connects many of the city’s major attractions, including Souq Waqif, Katara Cultural Village, and the Museum of Islamic Art. The metro fare starts at just 2 Qatari riyal, which is less than $1 USD, and tickets can be purchased at the station using cash or a rechargeable smart card. The Doha Metro is a great option for travelers who want to explore the city on a budget, but it may not be as convenient for those who are short on time or have a lot of luggage.
No matter which option you choose, getting from the airport to Doha city center is a breeze! Just make sure to plan ahead and choose the option that best suits your budget and travel needs.
What to do in Doha, Qatar
Explore the Souq Waqi
Souq Waqif is one of the oldest markets in Qatar, dating back over a century. The souq was restored to its former glory in 2008, with the traditional Qatari architectural style and layout preserved. The maze-like alleys of Souq Waqif are lined with shops selling a wide variety of goods, including spices, textiles, jewelry, perfumes, and traditional Qatari clothing. You can find everything from handmade carpets and pottery to intricately designed metalwork and souvenirs.

Check out the Aspire Park

There are also several playgrounds for children, as well as a train that takes visitors on a tour of the park.
